Design, decorative arts, material culture, objects and curiosities. A blog inspired by my interest in art history and museums.

Toilet Box, late 15th or early 16th century, Venice, painted enamel on copper, partly gilt, glass, Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This rather lovely little box splits open into two sections, which would have held ‘wash balls’ - mixtures of scented oils, herbs and spices, kneaded into a paste to form small balls of soap.
